Natyam AI

Bharatanatyam meets artificial intelligence

Natyam AI is a mobile application that helps Bharatanatyam students analyse and improve their posture (mudra), facial expressions (abhinaya), rhythm (laya), and overall performance — through intelligent feedback and personalised recommendations. It's being designed and built by Ananya Sharma, a dancer herself, for the community of students she trains alongside.

What It Does

Four Ways Natyam AI Helps Dancers Learn

Built around the core disciplines every Bharatanatyam student must master.

Posture & Mudra

Analyses body alignment, stance and hand gestures (mudras) against correct form, helping students self-correct between classes.

Abhinaya

Reads facial expression and emotional storytelling, giving feedback on how clearly a dancer's bhava comes across.

Laya

Tracks rhythmic precision and timing against the taalam, highlighting where footwork drifts ahead of or behind the beat.

Personalised Feedback

Combines all three into tailored, encouraging recommendations — so students know exactly what to practise next.

Why I'm Building This

Tradition, Carried Forward by Technology

A lifelong Bharatanatyam student herself, Ananya knows first-hand how much of learning this art form happens outside the classroom — hours of solo practice where a teacher isn't there to correct a wavering adavu or a mistimed mudra.

An enthusiastic reader with a keen interest in Computer Science and technology, she's channelling that curiosity into Natyam AI — built to give students real-time, judgment-free feedback between classes, without replacing the guru-shishya relationship at the heart of Bharatanatyam training.

"Bharatanatyam is rooted in timeless tradition — but technology can make learning it more accessible, engaging and effective for the next generation."

The Approach

How Natyam AI Works

Record

A student records themselves practising an adavu, jathi or full item on their phone.

Analyse

The app reviews posture, mudra accuracy, facial expression and rhythmic timing frame by frame.

Feedback

Clear, encouraging notes highlight what's working and what to adjust — in plain language.

Improve

Personalised recommendations guide the next practice session, building steady, measurable progress.
